Celebrating 20 Years of Music & Memories…
In celebration of our 20th Anniversary, we recently reached out to the Tupelo Music Hall community and asked them to submit their favorite memories and stories from experiences they’ve had with us over the years! Take a look at some of these responses below:
Mayall's Merch
We saw John Mayall (RIP) in 2013 and it was a great show. He’s never disappointed us over the years but this one was a bit special. We got to the theater early and wandered by the merch table to see what was for sale. There were a couple of live CDs that we wanted so we asked the person who was unpacking other merch how much they were. The person turned around to answer us and it was John Mayall setting up his own merch. He told us how much they were and asked if we wanted them signed, which we did. He also signed my Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton CD. We chatted for a few minutes and took a few pictures and got to tell him my introduction to the blues as a kid in the late 60s came from his early Bluesbreakers albums. He will be sorely missed. – Submitted by Mike R.
I Believe In Angels
I was at the Abba tribute band concert recently. I went last year too. I always dress up. When the singer Mia came into the audience she noticed my costume. She did a picture with me. What made this even more special was she was singing “I Have a Dream” which says” I believe in angels.” My son passed at age 21 and this month will have been gone 15 years. So this song meant so much to me and gave me such a happy memory. Thank you to Mia, it was her birthday too! – Submitted by Jeanmarie E.
From Patron to Performer
Took my daughter Izzy to her first two big rock shows a few years back: Stryper and Tom Keifer/Faster Pussycat, LA guns. This month she was blessed with the opportunity to be on your stage! – Submitted by Al M.
Charlie Daniels' Signature
Saw Charlie Daniel’s perform at Tupelo and got backstage passes from the Fan Club. Brought a fiddle for Mr. Daniels to sign and when asked he said, “It would be my honor”. Class act from a very genuine man and an outstanding performer. – Submitted by Jannine F.
Imagine Encore
Jefferson Starship were regulars at the old Tup. On their very first show there the encore was Lennon’s “Imagine”. Cathy Richardson is the vocalist for them and she was in tears as she sang that song…I’ll never forget that performance. – Submitted by Jim V.
The Old Tupelo
I fondly remember seeing the New Riders of the Purple Sage numerous times at the old Tuelo in Londonderry. There was no other venue with and nothing like having to move my Oscar cooler to let Dave a Nelson and Buddy Cage pass by to get onto the stage from that little room to the right of the stage.
Another funny story is from the final years at the old Tupelo on Londerry after the entrance was moved to the other side of the porch closer to the front or route 102 side. A friend & I didn’t know about the move so we were pounding on the old entrance door and since we weren’t being heard we just kept pounding om the door harder and harder until finally a staff member opened and pointed to a huge new sign that said ENTRANCE lol. You just can’t teach old dogs new tricks!
While I love the new Tupelo there was just something magical about the old Tupelo with BYOB, being able to hang out on the porch and to come & go in and out of the venue as you pleased. It harkened to days of the past and I was so sorry to see it go and yet so thankful for the great sound and great acts that the new larger Tupelo offers. – Submitted by Rob T.
The Tupelo Drive-In
Since the opening of the Tupleo Music hall, myself, family and friends have been going to enjoy the music, food, and a place right in the neighborhood, to listen to music. Music makes everything right, especially in the world we live in today. My favorite memories are when Scott, thought brilliantly to hold concerts outside during Covid, it not only was a great idea, but so much fun, and I don’t believe it rained hardly all summer that year. BRAVO!!!! Keep up the good work! – Submitted by Carol B.
Finding Love at Tupelo
I went to a John Eddie concert at the original Tupelo in Londonderry with some friends. Towards the end of the show I was standing under the 3rd light dancing next to a guy and I reached out and held his hand. We’ve been together ever since and seen too many shows to count. Thank you Scott for creating a place where I met the love of my life and all the music you’ve shared. – Submitted by Carolyn K.
Bo Diddley's Joke
Years ago Tupelo booked Bo Diddley. I knew that this opportunity to see a legend like him in a small setting such as the original Tupelo would never come again. We were fortunate to get front row seats. The show was great and to look at a legend eye to eye for 75 minutes was very special. Sadly, he left us shortly thereafter. During the show Diddley said when you get older “you need to watch out for Arthur…arthur-itis…I use that joke to this day. – Submitted by Andy G.
Open Mic Nights
I always enjoyed playing at the open mic nights at the old Londonderry location. The staff and audience always made the performers feel so welcome. It was also a great opportunity to try out new original material in front of an audience. My band, moon*colony, performed at the last open mic. Patrick Tucker played bass, Anderw Graham on acoustic, and I played acoustic and sang. Those were the days! – Submitted by Steve A.
Pandemic Tunes
During all the negatives of the pandemic period, the parking lot concerts you hosted were a huge positive experience! Audience was hungry for live music and performers were hungry to perform. Listening to outdoor music surrounded by other music appreciators while eating the good food delivered by golf cart was such a fun experience! We knew then that we would forever look back and smile at the memory! – Submitted by Peter M.
Lights Out
Howard Jones in Londonderry: I was up dancing near the wall by the side door where artists entered, and, mid-song, I accidentally leaned back and hit the light switch, turning on some house lights. I was horrified and quickly hit the switch again, but not before catching the stink-eye from nearly everyone there. – Submitted by Erika C.
It's All In the Family
We were thrilled to find live music so close to home when we found the big white house in Londonderry – The Muse and THEN – Scott came along and took things to the next level! My kids grew up going to shows (I’m a huge fan of live music – it’s my happy headspace!) – and my youngest literally grew up going to the Tupelo for shows – we follow so many bands we can’t name them all! Over Covid the drive in kept us sane and happy! I can’t pinpoint just one memory that stands above others -there were so many great ones – although meeting Richard Marx was extra fun and discovering the Magical Mystery Doors was up there – but there have been so many great talents that have passed through those doors it’s hard to narrow it down – I’m grateful to have such a great place to come and listen and enjoy live music and it’s local – huge bonus! The BEST part was this summer watching my youngest – Ethan do his internship for live sound at the Tupelo! I can’t even put into words how cool that was!! Here’s to so many more years of great music and a wonderful venue – the staff is tolp notch! Keep the music coming!! – Submitted by Maria O.
Sharing and Honoring Memories with Dad
My dad was a huge Rick Wakeman fan and he was absolutely ecstatic that he was playing the Tupelo back in 2019. We got tickets and he and I got to go and it was everything and more. Since then, he saw him play there again and went with his brother. Well this year Rick was playing there again but my dad is no longer here to go. So in his memory, and as this it the last time to ever see him tour, my mom and I went. – Submitted by Corey M.
